Red-tail News Issue 60 June 2025
Welcome to the winter edition of Red-tail News for 2025
Welcome to the winter edition of Red-tail News for 2025 It has been a busy 6 months and there plenty to catch up on in this edition of Red-tail news. The results are in from the 2023/2024 bioacoustics surveys showing an encouraging first look into the uptake of artificial nesting hollows deployed as part of our supplementary breeding hollows program. A flock of 30 birds seen feeding in 15-year-old stringybark revegetation was a fantastic demonstration of what successful revegetation over the years is achieving. Although a windy afternoon produced a lower count result in this year’s Annual Count the support from volunteers was record breaking with 205 people volunteering to take part. The team would like to express sincere gratitude to everyone who helped organise or support the count. Without the volunteers, organisations promoting the count, and the amazing parks and forestry crews supporting access, permitting, and providing advice for fire impacted areas, the count wouldn’t have been possible. We would also like to thank Aunty Cathy Munroe, Gunditjmara elder, for her moving Welcome to Country at the Annual Count training. Finally, we would like to express a deep and heartfelt thank you to all the firefighting personnel and volunteers who have given so many hours and worked so hard to fight wildfire to protect the habitats that are critical to the survival of our birds over this and every fire season.
